At Westwood First School we recognise the importance of learning to read and prioritise the teaching and learning of phonics from the very start of your child's journey with us.

At our school, we use the Read Write Inc. (RWI) phonics programme to help children learn to read and write confidently. Developed by Ruth Miskin, RWI is a structured and engaging approach that teaches children to decode words using sounds (phonemes) and letter patterns (graphemes). Through daily lessons, children build strong foundations in reading, spelling, and comprehension, while developing a love for books and storytelling. We’re excited to support your child’s journey into literacy with this proven and effective scheme.
